Biography
Inspired by the sounds of everyday life, Jieun Ok writes music that invites listeners to reconnect with their own memories and discover personal meanings through sound. Her music spans a wide range of styles, from children's songs to chamber and orchestral music, reflecting her commitment to writing for diverse performers and audiences.
Ok was awarded a Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival and School. She received First Prize in the Indiana University NOTUS Student Composition Competition, and her music was selected for the New Voices for Orchetra concert. She was also commissioned by the Indiana University New Music Ensemble (NME) and collaborated with the ensemble during its concert tour in South Korea.
Her music has been performed by the Indiana University Symphony Orchestra, Indiana University New Music Ensemble, NOTUS, Indiana University Brass Band, Cheongju Philharmonic Orchestra, Flasic Game Orchestra, Seoul Choral Society, Busan Conductors Choir, Busan Harmony Choir, and Trio Achim. She also composed the original score for Twelfth Night, a Shakespeare production presented at Indiana University.
Ok received her Bachelor of Music in Composition from Yonsei University, where she studied with Jiseon Lim, Kyungsun Ryu, and Eunji Lee. She earned a Master of Music in Composition and Music Theory from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, studying with P. Q. Phan and David Dzubay. She will begin the Master of Musical Arts (M.M.A.) program in Composition at the Yale School of Music.
She is the resident composer of Trio Achim and a member of the Korea Children's Song Culture Association.
